Will driving my car with a broken serpantine belt damage my power steering?
If I drove my Ford Explorer a few miles, after it had a broken serpantine belt, could it have possibly damaged my power steering.
Also, how can I tell if my serpantine belt is loose. Thank you.
Thanks for all of the wonderful responses I did get the belt replaced along with the tensioners but now the steering wheel pulsates while turning. Do you think the belt is not tight enough?
A serpentine belt has an automatic (spring loaded armature with a pulley wheel) tensioner.
That is one big belt that runs everything water pump, alternator, power steering.
If that belt broke or came off , you lost function to all those components at once.
It should not have damage to anything (it was real hard to turn the wheel though, wasn't it? )
You could of easily busted an engine block with the water pump being disabled though. You would definitely no when this happens.
When you have engine problems , always watch your oil and water guages , and simply shut the engine down before they ever get too high or to low
Most tensioners have a guage on the face (near the pivot point of the arm and pulley) has a little stamped arrow .
As the belt wears it stretches, and the tension guage moves with the arm, as it compensates the tension to the belt , at the pulley
You really need to invest in a $10 book on your vehicle . You can buy them at any auto parts store. And they are well worth the information contained in them.
