question about gaining Upper Body muscle?
I want to keep cycling to tone up legs but I heard that doing cardio is no good if you want to add upper body muscle. But is cycling is really just using your legs right? It doesn't effect upper body.
no, i mean will cycling effect my ability to gain upper body muscle like maybe running would? Or am I wrong on that too?
Cardio is no good for building muscle, but not for that reason. Which muscles you use when doing cardio doesn't affect which muscles grow or which muscle the cardio keeps from growing. Running is not gonna make you gain or make you lose or keep you from gaining upper body muscle anymore than cycling would. People say you shouldn't do cardio because when you do cardio you burn calories, and to gain muscle weight, you need a lot of calories. Another reason cardio is bad if you want to gain muscle is because cardio trains your endurance. I don't really understand why, but I heard that it's hard to reach maximum endurance and maximum strength at the same time. To gain muscle you need to get stronger, and that's hard to do when you're also training for endurance (doing cardio). You can still do cardio, I mean I lift weights and also do cardio, but you probably should focus more on lifting weights if you wanna gain weight. You also have to eat a lot if it's hard for you to gain weight.
You shouldn't really think of each muscle group separately. Unless you've been lifting for a long time, you need to do compound exercises. That means squats, deadlifts, Bench Press, overhead press, pull-ups, etc. Compound exercises let you use more muscles which means you can lift heavier weights. Heavier weights stress your muscles more, so there's more growth overall.
