Need to modify signal for digital counter?
I am trying to count pulses with an Omron H7CX digital counter. The counter has the following specs:
Max. counting speed: 5 kHz
Hight level: 4.5 to 30 VDC
Low level: 0 to 2 VDC
Input resistance: Approx. 4.7 kOhm
My signal source is:
+5 V, 500 ns wide; 50-W output impedance
I can count this signal with a 1 Mhz TTL counter, but the Omron gives no counts. Is there a simple chip I can use to adjust the signal?
What you need is called a "pulse stretcher". You can google that and find lots of examples.
The attached reference has one example that uses a single CMO hex Schmidt-trigger inverter chip with a few external components. The circuit will work fine at five volts with any one of the three chips mentioned: 74HC14, 74C14 or CD40106.
The function is also called a one-shot, although the trigger isn't necessarily the same polarity as the output signal. The second link has a couple of chip examples.
