What's the difference between using an exercise bike and riding a real bike?
Ok so live in the pacific northwest, and if you live there you know how much it rains, so anyways i'm originally a runner but thanx to my self discipline and determination i contracted a stress fracture. so i've started using a bike as my exercise, i ride up and down hills constantly for 3 hours. i was wondering if using an exercise bike would be the same workout or if i should just get the hecka soaked when it rains outside.
In the end the idea is the same, get exercise, strengthen the heart, lungs, and leg muscles. The real difference is that on a Stationary Bike you set the tensity and pedal and pedal and pedal. On a real bike you get uneven terrain to mix things up, you can take corners, and, well, you can have fun going somewhere, there's nothing more monotonous and boring than a startionary bike.
Besides, I love riding in the rain - it's refreshing and the paths aren't crowded with dog-walkers and other bikers.
PS: to get good exercise out of it, pedal at a cadence of about 80-90 rpm (that is, the crank should do a full revolution 80-90 times every minute)
