When drawing a histogram if there are now gaps between classes what to do?
If classes are :
0<= X < 500
500<= X < 1000
1000<= X < 2000...
There are no gaps what do I use to plot classes?
Also if I'm given for example
Classes:
0-
10-
20-
30-
What are the limits here, what do I do to find class width and mid point.
Thankx URGENT. Got S1 soon...
Must all classes be of same width. I remember that at A-level we were told no, but at IGCSE we were told they do?!

In drawing a histogram, you will always put the rectangle right next to each other. You use the endpoints of the classes to plot the classes. Don't over think this; in your first example, the first class starts at 0 and ends at 500, the second starts at 500 and ends at 1000.
For your second example, you could state the classes as
0 - under 10
10 - under 20
20 - under 30
30 - under 40.
The class widths can be found by taking the upper endpoint and subtracting the lower endpoint. So each class is of length 10. The midpoint will be the average of the endpoints for that class, so here they would be 5, 15, 25, and 35.
Think of these as ages. If there is a person who is 9 years and 364 days old, they will still fall in the first class (0 - under 10). However if that person is 10 years and no day old, they would be placed in the second class (10 - under 20).
edit: If you are drawing a frequency or relative frequency histogram, the you need to have equal class lengths. Otherwise the histogram does not give an accurate picture of the distribution of the data. Remember that this is a drawing of recangles, and rectangles are two dimensional. The have not only length, but height, thus area plays a part. Varying the class lengths will change the areas in frequency or relative frequency histograms.
Now if you are drawing a density histogram, then varying the class lengths are OK. Density histograms take class lengths into account and adjust the areas of the rectangles.
The link below has a section on drawing density histograms. Note that you need to be able to read pdf files to see it (so you would need Adobe Reader or Ghostviewer or something).
