If you fire a bullet in the air from a standard hand gun, how high would it go?
I had an interesting discussion about this recently. Very roughly put, there are two thing that can be said about its return trip.
1. Expereince shows that such bullets often fall butt-first.
2. Very approximate calculations considering terminal velocity suggest the speed range of the falling bullet will be about 200 - 300 feet per second.
There are just too many factors to answer these questions accurately. As many have pointed out, a lot depends on the exact gun used, as well as the ammunition itself. In simple terms, muzzle velocity, caliber, length, shape of nose, all affect how high the bullet will go.
Also, air pressure, humidity, and wind will affect its trajectory.
One thing you can be reasonably certain of; most hand guns would fire a bullet with enough velocity to result in the bullet attaining terminal velocity on the way down.
