Shoudl I convert a road bike to a straight-bar commuter?
I want a high-end commuter. My donor bike is a $2K Litespeed Firenze. I wonder if it's worth converting it to a straight-bar commuter with the Rapid Rise shifting. My other option is to add slicks to my lightweight hardtail and sell the road bike. Which would you do?
Nice to have choices. 
The Mountain bike option will be more versatile. It will fair better on rougher roads, easier to put fenders on if you ride in the rain, and also will probably have better options if you want to put a rack on to carry anything. If the Firenze is already set up, personally I wouldn't mess with a straight bar. I prefer drops for greater comfort on longer rides. For commuting, just put on a good set of puncture resistant tires in 25mm or 28mm if they will fit. I've had good luck with Armadillos or Gatorskins.
If none of the above applies to you, and you are just looking to justify tweaking the Firenze to satisfy an itch, go for it. It would be a great Light Weight commuter. If your ride isn't hilly or very long I think it would make an awesome single speed.
