Sprained ankle- should I wear an ACE bandage (wrap) or a Support Brace?
I sprained/twisted my ankle on Wednesday night (2.5 days ago). Immediately after the injury I iced it and elevated it. I have to walk and move around, but I have been wearing an Ankle Support brace with bilateral support. Yesterday, I tried using an Ace Bandage Wrap, and it really made it feel better... what should I be wearing now???
well, i already have the wrap and the brace... and i don't want to seem like i am over-reacting!
but basically the brace provides support, but the wrap provides compression/pressure. so im not sure which i need right now... it is swollen on the outside of my ankle.
Whilst the ace-wrap does provide compression, you should only be using compression on a sprain for the first 24 - 48 hours, after that it's not going to do you any good.
I personally always suggest a proper ankle brace after 48 hours, but one that's right for the type of sprain you have, you might not have a lateral sprain, and if you don't, you don't need lateral support.
I suggest seeing a doctor, not for a prescription for pain meds, just for a diagnosis on the sprain, many people have walked around on broken or fractured ankles thinking they were sprained, it's more common than you think, but not a normal occurrence. Once your doctor tells you what kind of sprain you have you can then find the right support for you.
If you live in the UK, go to a physiotherapy warehouse, those guys are miracle workers when it comes to finding the right type of ankle brace for sprains, I swear to god my ankle has never felt as strong as it has when I'm wearing a brace from there, even before I snapped my Achilles.
If you live in the US, look for sports stores that stock ankle braces and supports and guys that can help you pick the right one for you, I'm sure there is a US equivalent of the physiotherapy warehouse if you look hard enough.
If it's still swollen, you shouldn't be walking on it, you should be resting it.
For the first 48 hours after a sprain use R.I.C.E. then M.E.A.T. this ehow article will explain how to use them to your advantage: http://www.ehow.com/how_4671118_strain-written-licensed-massage-therapist.html
If after a week or so it's not better with self-help, you should seek medical assistance, the sprain could be worse than you think.
